Yesterday some work got done to clear out the front side of the dam, and two initial holes were drilled in the dam. It's 9 feet thick at the base.

Today our general contractor was back at work and the concrete sawing could get started in earnest.

First the back of the dam had to be exposed to the diamond cutting cable could be run through the holes.

After that was done the cutting machinery could be set up. It's basically a hydraulically operated spinning wheel, and the abrasive cable is threaded through it. The powered wheel is on a track so it can move and keep the cable taut as it cuts through the concrete. It's a pretty simple and elegant idea, although it takes some time to set up.

So cutting can start .. you can see the worthless old 24 inch pipe in this shot..

They are going to make two cuts and then attempt to knock over this large section of concrete. At 150 pounds per cubic foot I estimate it weighs about 75 tons. Once it is knocked over they are going to break it up and "lose it" under the new pipe.

If they cannot knock it over after two cuts they will make a third cut.
